Putnam comes to Salem International University after coaching at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine where he coached the Monks from 2011 until 2014. In three years at Saint Joseph’s, Putnam progressed the track and field team from club to competing as a varsity program in the NCAA. Coach Putnam saw a multitude of success with the cross-country team as his women’s teams were GNAC (Great Northwest Athletic Conference) runners up in both 2012 and 2013. The Monks' men’s team, a team down to only one runner when Putnam arrived,  where runners up in the GNAC championships in 2013.

In his three years at Saint Joseph’s, Putnam was named Coach of the Year for his women’s team in 2012 and again in 2013. 

Prior to his coaching stint at Saint Joe’s, Putnam was the Head Track and Cross Country Coach at Lewiston High School of Lewiston, Mainefrom 1999 to 2009. There Coach Putnam’s Track and Field and Cross Country teams progressed to become perennial contenders. His teams combined for eight championships, including a pair of Maine State Titles. For his efforts, Putnam received eight Coach of the Year accolades and a pair of Maine Sunday Telegram coaching honors.

Putnam currently resides in Fairmont, WV with his two dogs, a beagle/sheltie named Jacob, and a ridgeback named Jamie.
