MSO: Cleveland State Eludes SIU, 3-2 in OT Exhibition
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Salem International men’s soccer team faced off with Division-I foe, Cleveland State, in an exhibition match on Friday. The Vikings came away with a 3-2 victory in overtime.
CSU’s Sergio Manesio tallied the only marker of the opening frame in the 41st minute.
Salem answered just over a minute into the second period when Javier Ruiz Paz found the back of the net, knotting the game at 1-1. Dan Koniarczyk put the Vikings back in front with a goal in the 61st minute. The Tigers once again managed a response, as Dominic Gillespie drilled the equalizer in the 82nd minute, setting the stage for extra time.
Cleveland State’s Alvaro Pichardo drove home the game-winner in the 96th minute of the contest.
CSU held a 16-4 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 margin in shots on goal. Elliott Cook made four saves for the Tigers.
SIU kicks off the regular season on Thursday at Pikeville (Ky.). Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
