Randy Unger - Head Basketball Coach
SALEM, W.Va. -- Salem International University is pleased to announce the selection of Randy N. Unger as its new head men’s basketball coach. Unger currently serves as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Glenville State College, a NCAA Division II school. He will begin his new duties with the SIU Tigers on December 3rd. “We are ecstatic about Coach Unger joining SIU as Head Men’s Basketball Coach,” said Keith Bullion, Director of Athletics at Salem International University. “His past three years at Glenville State has given him first-hand knowledge of our team, our talent, and our university. He is a talented recruiter as well as a coach and we are excited about the integrity and new energy he brings to the Salem Tigers. SIU has a proud tradition of success and we look forward to continuing in that tradition under Coach Unger’s leadership.” A 1976 Physical Education/Health graduate of Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, Unger has spent more than 23 years as a head coach at high school, junior college, NAIA and NCAA Division II levels. He has 329 career victories by teams as a head coach and has more than 40 former players currently coaching at the high school, college and professional levels. He played four years at Taylor University and spent five years as an assistant at both NCAA Division I and II schools. In addition to his national contacts, Coach Unger brings a familiarity with both the region and the conference that will serve him and the University well as the men’s basketball program progresses. “I am honored to be able to work with quality people such as Chancellor Brooks, Dr. Harrison, and Coach Bullion at Salem International University,” Unger said “Glenville State has been very good to me but this opportunity, at this time, was a situation I felt was a good fit.” Coach Unger will also be joining the faculty as Coordinator of Physical Education. “As Provost, I am pleased to welcome Mr. Unger to the Education Department and the University,” SIU Provost and Chief Academic Officer Debra Harrison commented. “Being familiar with Mr. Unger’s abilities, I know he will not only be a role model for our student athletes on the court, he will also be a role model for our students in the classroom.” |
